The Mayo Clinic has a long history of research in geriatric treatment, but the future of geriatric medicine may be even brighter. With the help of the Mayo Clinic Center for Geriatric Medicine, researchers will find new ways to improve care for the elderly. In addition to its expertise in geriatrics, UNC Geriatrics will also explore the role of research in the future of geriatrics.

Mayo Clinic Geriatrics

The Mayo Clinic recently announced the formation of a new division of geriatric treatment and gerontology, under the leadership of Robert Pignolo, M.D., formerly of the University of Pennsylvania. Pignolo also serves as the division’s director of the Translation and Pharmacology Program and the Kogod Center on Aging. The goal is to achieve Level 1 certification by 2022.

The 38th Annual Geriatric Care Conference is being held in Rochester, Minnesota, from Jun. 27-29. This live CNE conference will focus on the latest in dementia care, COVID in the elderly, and telehealth. The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science has designated 6.75 ANCC contact hours for this conference. The conference is open to healthcare professionals of all specialties.

Mayo Clinic Geriatrics and Palliative Care

The 38th Annual Geriatric Care Conference, presented by the Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development, will take place on Jun 29, 2022, in Rochester, Minnesota. This conference features live CNE activities on topics such as taking medication history, telehealth, and the latest developments in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease treatment. The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science designates up to 6.75 contact hours for this conference.

The new division will bring together more than 50 geriatricians and other specialists in the field of age care. The new division is expected to strengthen collaboration between investigators, support additional research initiatives, and train future geriatric physicians. As part of the new division, Dr. Pignolo will continue to serve as director of the Kogod Center for Aging and Translation and Pharmacology Program.

UNC Geriatrics

In the past two years, UNC Geriatrics has had a number of accomplishments and events. His scholarship year will include participation in an in-person workshop in Washington D.C., six webinars, and a research journal publication.

UNC Geriatrics is the largest primary care practice specializing in the care of older adults. In addition, the practice plans to relocate to the brand-new UNC Medical Office Building at Eastowne by 2022. And with the award comes the promise of increased patient volume and increased services. Until 2022, the clinic has grown to become the largest primary care practice for older adults in the Triangle.

Dr. Patel’s training in emergency medicine led her to pursue a fellowship in geriatric treatment at Northwestern University in Chicago. If she’s successful, she may be the next UNC Geriatrics faculty member to join her team.
